One idea that really makes sense for your family is to have food ready for a disaster – earthquake, power outage, or worse. You really need to plan by getting a good supply of Pre-packaged Food for Emergencies! With these choices below, you will have a slew of options that will be not only nutritious, flavorful, easy to store and make, and include numerous dietary restrictions as well.
We have previously blogged about vacuum-sealing fresh food which will store for months (at least!) in a freezer – and even though that is a great idea for non-emergencies as well – one idea you really need to explore is getting at least a week’s supply of pre-packaged food for each member of your family.
Many of these have been popular with hikers, back-packers and explorers for years (not to mention the honorable members of our military, who can live for extended periods of time on MRE’s), and they are easy to store and utilize – in fact all you need is some hot water.
Some of the most popular brands are:
Wise Food Storage – their slogan is “ready-made freeze dried and dehydrated entrées for emergency preparedness and outdoor use.” And, with a spokesperson like Marie Osmond, how can they be wrong? They claim that their products have a 25-year shelf life, and include such treats as pasta, macaroni and cheese, chili, lasagna and stroganoff. They also sell in 6-month and year supplies. “Marie, my darling, what would you fancy tonight??”
Prepare Wise – Prepare Wise lists their offerings by category, which is quite varied and impressive. They sell complete meal packages, freeze dried meats, breakfast items, dinner entrees, gluten free selections, freeze dried fruits, vegetebles and grains, and more – even pet food! And, their website displays how-to videos (even though I think we’ve got this covered) and nice recipes. They also boast a 25-year shelf life.
eFoods Direct – featuring single items and complete meals, in 1-week to yearly amounts, and quite varies, just like Prepare Wise. Some of their specializations include: “eFoodsDirect sources ingredients from growers who follow Good Agricultural Practices and are GAP Certified. This means that they are audited frequently to ensure that they do not use harmful insecticides, pesticides or fertilizers during cultivation. Furthermore, GAP certification ensures proper control over the quality of water used for irrigation, animal access to crops and proper disposal of any raw waste, equipment sanitation, sanitary facilities for workers, transportation. Kosher Certified: regardless of religious associations, Kosher food takes quality to a whole new level. eFoodsDirect has taken things a step further to get products Kosher Certified. This provides consumers with confidence that ingredients have been carefully checked for cleanliness and purity. Nutritional Value: Foods do not contain trans fats, hydrogenated oils, lactose, or added MSG .”
These three companies represent the pinnacle of what’s out there for your family in the would of easy-to-store-and-prepare foods for an emergency, or even just a weekend camping trip (in case you forget your frozen Chasen’s Chili). Between these companies, almost all ones concerns for quality and variation are represented. Read up, buy a day’s supply, and give them a go. Find a few that you like before you commit to a year’s worth – and better yet, combine them with some of the vacuum-sealed meats and fish we’ve discussed earlier!
