The ‘Knockout’ Game – Coming to a Street Near You! If we ever had a reason to learn how to defend ourselves, it’s this cruel “fad” that has shown up in the news with alarming frequency. In our ongoing series on Martial Arts – we have discussed that one must not see the world as a segmented place, with random violence only happening on far-away places that we see when we watch CNN. It’s right here in our neighborhood – you local shopping center mall parking lot, the underground parking lot at work, the alley when you keep your home’s trash cans, the local “safe” streets where you jog or walk your dog, the boulevards we have walked hundreds of times when we go out to our favorite restaurants, and sometimes right inside our homes.
This “knockout game” was featured on CBS New York recently:
“Police: Examples Of Troubling ‘Knockout’ Game Popping Up All Over”. Recent Attacks Have Targeted Brooklyn Jews; 78-Year-Old Woman Latest Victim. NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A disturbing and brutal game among teens is also targeting other victims in other cities. Just last week, CBS 2’s John Slattery reported on a disturbing series of attacks on Jews in Brooklyn. Now we’re find out New York City is not alone.Brutal video is coming in from various places, including Pittsburgh, where a teacher was attacked, and London, where a teen was hit from behind. On Tuesday afternoon, CBS 2 learned of another victim — a 78-year-old woman attacked a week ago Saturday in Midwood. It’s called the ‘knockout game.’ The victim in Pittsburgh was 50-year-old James Addeslpurger. A 15-year-old was charged with assault.”
If you haven’t seen it, here it is:“Knockout Game”
The world of martial arts can have a very daunting impression on most of us – especially since the moves that constitute “martial arts” that we are fed by movies, tv shows and the media are rather gymnastic and impressive in nature, and it’s hard to see our 40+ year-old bodies flying in the air at will to dispense multiple armed opponents, without missing a beat, or breaking a sweat.
However, in reality, those flashy moves are perfect where they are portrayed – in the movies. Go onto Youtube and watch a few video clips on some “realistic” martial arts – such as Military combatives, Kajukenbo, San Soo, or Krav Maga – you’ll see moves performed by people who look like us (yes, adults who should get to the gym more often!) performing rather simple moves that have great impact for self preservation and confidence. Those moves are tools in a toolbox – and everyone should learn a dozen of them – and keep them sharply trained. And that includes how to use a small and concealable weapon that we can carry on us at all times – such as a ball point pen.
Perhaps the most simple move I ever learned while studying was a simple “cover” from a Thai Boxing drill, where you simply bring your hand up to the same side of your head and keep it there – just like “combing” your hair. By doing this, you create a shield (as well as raising a pointed bent elbow, a formidible weapon on it’s own) that guards your face and head from any incoming strikes. Our teacher used to yell “comb your hair!” before throwing a series of punches at us – and I even taught it to my wife, as it’s a perfect way to protect yourself from people walking into you at a crowded mall (yes, ladies shopping for shoes on sale can be rather erratic).
